The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12) seized at least 102 alleged illegally sourced lumber used for unauthorized boat-making operations in Maitum, Sarangani.

The multi-agency operation was led by DENR-12 on August 21, 2025.

DENR-12 said the confiscated forest products were identified as yakal and lauan hardwood species, which are highly regulated due to their ecological importance.

Authorities said the lumber confiscated measured around 3,497 board feet and worth more than P157,000.

DENR-12 added that based on initial findings, the alleged illegal operation may have sourced the lumber from protected forest zones, posing risks to biodiversity and forest ecosystems.

Data from the DENR-12 also showed that more than 10,000 board feet of illegal lumber have been confiscated in similar operations since January 2025.

Following the recent operation, DENR-12 said show cause orders and cease and desist orders will be issued to all identified violators.

“A formal Adjudication Hearing has been scheduled to address the violations and determine appropriate penalties,” DENR-12 said.

“DENR-12 emphasized its ongoing commitment to protecting the region’s natural resources, stating that sustained enforcement efforts are crucial to preventing further environmental degradation and ensuring the sustainable management of forest products in the region,” it added.
