An alleged leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) has surrendered in Carmen, Surigao del Sur to reunite with his wife and newborn child.
According to the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), the NPA leader turned himself in to the 36th Infantry Battalion along with his brother who is also a member of the NPA.
“According to him, the turning point came after sustained combat operations of troops and his intention to be reunited with his wife alias "Marga" who surrendered after an encounter last June 25,” 4ID said.
The military said the NPA leader served as a platoon commanding officer of an NPA unit operating in Surigao del Sur and was allegedly involved in several armed encounters and extortion activities.
“His surrender marks another victory in the 4ID’s intensified campaign to end local communist armed conflict through peaceful means and community engagement,” 4ID added.
The military added that after the NPA leader and his brother surrendered, they revealed the location of their firearms, which were hidden in Barangay Sibahay, Lanuza town.
Troops recovered two Carbine 5.56mm rifles, magazines, and anti-personnel mine with detonating cord.
4ID Commander, Major General Michele Anayron Jr., lauded the troops for facilitating the surrender of the two brothers and recovering the war materiel. He also commended the NPA rebels for embracing a new life.
“We welcome their decision to surrender and we assure them and their family that the government will provide the necessary support for their reintegration. Their story is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to change and choose a peaceful life together with their loved ones,” Anayron said.
