Several flights at the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Lapu-Lapu City were affected by a temporary closure of the primary runway, following clearing of fragments of asphalt that broke off.
The primary runway of the airport was placed under rehabilitation since July 16, 2025.
MCIA General Manager Julius Neri, Jr. said that he received reports from a few pilots on fragments of asphalt the broke off on the primary runway. After airport personnel checked the area, pilots have been advised immediately to avoid the said runway.
However, as switching from the primary runway to the secondary runway is quite challenging, it took nearly two hours before normal flights resumed at the MCIA.
At 4:35 p.m. on August 26, 2025, the primary runway was closed temporarily while personnel from the Engineering Department facilitated emergency safety checks.
At 6:20 p.m., the secondary runway was made operational.
Due to the incident, one international flight was cancelled, while three others were delayed; 25 domestic flights were delayed, 11 diverted, and four cancelled.
On August 27, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., the primary runway was used again. On this day, GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak learned from a few passengers that they have not encountered any delay in their respective flights.
In a meeting with officials of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, and the Department of Transportation, it was agreed that the period of the repair and rehabilitation works on the primary runway would be adjusted to expedite works.
Previously, the secondary runway is open from 3:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., or eight hours. Currently, the secondary runway will be used from 3:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or 14 hours.
Instead of a one-year target date of completion, it is expected that the rehabilitation works will be completed in about eight months.
