A 16-year-old girl drowned in the Angalacan River in Barangay Osiem, Mangaldan, Pangasinan, evening on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, during a night out with friends, police said.
The victim, identified as Lyka, was last seen by her mother, Rochelle Cabangan, on Sunday morning before leaving home evening that day.
“Masakit, sobrang sakit. Kaya lang ma’am, palagi na lang kasi niya kasama ang barkada niya kaya ganyan ang nangyari,” the vitcim's mother said.
Police investigators reported that before swimming in the river, the victim and her friends had been drinking.
“Nagyaya ang victim na maligo. Allegedly, ‘yung victim hindi marunong lumangoy so the companions of the said victim is trying to rescue pero the current of the river Angalacan is too heavy,” PMaj. Ronald Bautista, deputy chief of Mangaldan Police Station, said.
Lyka was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Her mother said Lyka stayed at home rarely and often spent time with her friends. The family described her death as painful and heartbreaking.
Police urged parents to monitor their children closely, especially minors, and warned against swimming in rivers or seas after drinking alcohol.
