Heavy rains are slowing down the construction of a drainage canal along Cortez Street in Barangay Guilig, Mangaldan, Pangasinan, as floodwater continues to fill the worksite.
Workers need to use water pumps before they can proceed with the project.
Project foreman PJ Garcia admitted that the weather has made their job difficult.
“Hindi kami masyado makakilos kasi may tubig ang kanal. Kailangan namin ng water pump,” he said.
Despite the challenge, Barangay Councilman Nilson Tibunsay assured that the project remains ongoing.
“Maski may tubig, tuloy ang trabaho nila,” he said.
Tibunsay added that the drainage canal is crucial since the area often experiences flooding that affects both residents and motorists.
Once finished, the drainage system will cover more areas.
“Kapag matapos ‘yan, malaking bagay. Ang plano namin hanggang sa kabilang kalsada matapos din,” Tibunsay said.
Residents like Cleo Cera are also hopeful.
“Malaking tulong ito kasi wala nang baha sa oras na matapos,” Cera said.
For now, the road is closed to motorists while construction continues. The project is expected to be completed by September 2025.
