All 82 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and seven jail staff of Mamburao District Jail tested negative for HIV and AIDS after a two-day screening held on August 27–28, 2025.
The health activity was led by Jail Senior Inspector Leslie Dangupon, district jail warden, with the assistance of Jail Nurse JO2 Richmund Mata in partnership with the Mamburao Municipal Health Office (MHO).
BJMP Mimaropa regional information officer JO3 Joefrie Anglo said the screening ensured the welfare of those inside the jail while promoting government efforts on HIV and AIDS prevention.
“This activity not only safeguards the health of our PDLs and personnel but also supports the national campaign against HIV and AIDS by ensuring access to medical services even inside jail facilities,” Anglo said.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology thanked the MHO for its support and stressed that health care is a basic right of every person, including those under detention.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), there are over 140,000 cases of HIV in the Philippines as of June 2025.
The DOH said in the first three months of 2025, a total of 5,101 HIV cases were confirmed, meaning 57 new cases were recorded everyday from January to March 2025.
