The prime suspect in the slay of a farm caretaker in Barangay Pung-ol Sibugay, upland Cebu City, was arrested morning on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Police arrested 43-year-old Jonathan Leoligao, prime suspect in the killing of 46-year-old Jovanni Asir Bonghanoy, a caretaker of a farm for game fowls, or cockfighting fowls. 

The suspect went in hiding at the Taboan Public Market in Barangay San Nicolas Proper, Cebu City. 

Leoligao and Bonghanoy were both workers at the game fowl farm.

On August 28, 2025, three other suspects were arrested, while one who is a person of minor age was "rescued."

The other suspects reportedly assisted Leoligao in stuffing the victim’s body into a sack and burying him in the vicinity of the farm.

Leoligao was taken back by police personnel to the game farm where reenactment at the crime scene was conducted under the supervision of Police Captain Kentbel Ceasar Parcon, chief of Malubog Police Station 12, and Police Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, deputy city director for operations of the Cebu City Police Office.

In an interview with GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak, Leoligao owned up perpetrating the stabbing to death of Bonghanoy on August 24, 2025 for personal grudge.

He said that the victim was hit on the neck. He accused the victim to have hurled harsh words at him during their drinking spree with the four other suspects.

The suspect apologized for perpetrating the crime and for asking the others to help him dispose of the body.

On August 27, 2025, the body of the victim was located and dug up.

Bonghanoy’s family said they cannot forgive the suspect, citing that the incident is brutal and hard to bear.

Murder charges will be filed against the suspects.
