Areas in the Province of Antique were flooded, with an incident of mudslide reported, due to intense rain brought about by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) and the Low Pressure Area.

Based on data from the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), areas in Sibalom and other municipalities were flooded, following intense rains on August 31, 2025.

A mudslide was recorded along the highway in Barangay Igbarawan, Patnongon town that stalled vehicular traffic for hours.

On Monday, September 1, 2025, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced a suspension of classes and government work in certain provinces in the country, including Antique.

“Umaambon pa rin dito sa (bayan ng) San Jose at may posibilidad na lumakas pa ang ulan. That’s why naka-heightened alert pa rin ang ating Operations Center,” said Broderick Train, head of Antique PDRRMO.

According to Department of Education (DepEd) 6, classes took a shift to Alternative Delivery Mode after in-person classes were cancelled.

“This will ensure that despite na merong masamang panahon, malakas ang ulan, yet patuloy ang pag-aaral ng ating mga estudyante,” Hernani Escullar Jr., spokesperson of DepEd 6, said.

In September 2025, rainy days are expected due to the La Niña phenomenon.

Barangay Taft North in Mandurriao District, Iloilo City, for example, is deemed a flood-prone area. Residents have braced for evacuation as the need arises.

“Tapos na. Nakapagligpit na kami (ng gamit), nakahanda na. Hindi ka pa ba maghahanda na naranasan mo na?” Emperatriz Vipinosa, a resident, said.

Residents along the coastal area in Barangay Calumpang, Molo District have prepared sand bags, expecting huge waves to hit their houses.

“Kaya may sako ng buhangin dahil ginagawang bakod ‘yan sa kawayan,” Irene Mendez, another resident, said.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, Western Visayas or portions of the region are usually affected by the southwest monsoon.

“Basta southwest monsoon, usually naaapektuhan talaga ang areas ng Antique, western portion ng Iloilo at sa southern portion ng Negros Occidental,” said Jan Baron, PAGASA weather facilities technician.
