Central Visayas logged a total of 188 cases of leptospirosis, with 20 fatalities, from January 2025 to August 2025.

The figures showed that cases of leptospirosis in Central Visayas went up by 68 percent compared to the 112 cases recorded in the same period in 2024.

The Department of Health (DOH) expects increase in the number of cases because of the rainy season.

About 77 percent of individuals inflicted by leptospirosis were admitted at hospitals. However, DOH clarified that utilization rate in hospitals is still on “normal level.”

Based on data from DOH, individuals who were infected by leptospirosis are farmers tending their rice fields, students, persons who escort and fetch students to and from school, and other individuals who wade through floodwaters.

In addition, a total of 20 persons died due to leptospirosis from January 2025 to August 2025.

The number has apparently doubled based on the 10 death cases recorded in the same period in 2024.

The Top 5 places with the most number of leptospirosis cases are Cebu City, Province of Cebu, Province of Bohol, Mandaue City, and Lapu-Lapu City.

However, the DOH has not provided GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak the data on the exact number of cases for each place mentioned, citing that such information must come from the concerned Local Government Unit (LGU).

DOH pointed out that aside from rats, other animals such as dogs and cats infected by the bacterium, Leptospira, can also become carriers of the disease.
