At least six areas in Barangay Curuan, Zamboanga City were flooded after a river reportedly overflowed following heavy rains on Monday, September 1, 2025.

Barangay officials and rescue teams from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded to the areas affected to carry out rescue operations.

Floodwaters reportedly entered several houses in Sitio Camias.

Some pigs of a resident in the barangay proper were also seen tied outside their pen as their pens have been submerged in floodwater.

Floodwaters at the market also reached knee-deep.

In Sitio Poblacion, students heading home were seen carrying their shoes while wading through floodwaters.

Some children were also seen swimming in the floodwaters that submerged several houses in another area of the barangay.

Floodwaters reportedly subsided at around 5 p.m.

Barangay officials are still checking the number of households affected.

According to the barangay, the low riprap at the river is among the reasons for the flooding.

“As of now naman, yung newly elected District 2 congressman, nag-allocate naman ng budget regarding this river para sa riprap para pwede ma-flood control siguro namin. Nag-allocate naman, kasi mababa talaga yung riprap sa Curuan,” Barangay Curuan Councilman Joenard Popoy Manuel said.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant for possible flooding, especially during bad weather.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather experienced in Mindanao was due to the southwest monsoon or Habagat and localized thunderstorms.
