A basketball match turned into a brawl when tension erupted between two opposing teams in Barangay Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City.

The video captured by a netizen showed how repeated shoving and rough play eventually led to the brawl. Players involved were seen throwing punches and ganging up on some opponents.

Barangay Agusan Chairman, Andrew Melliza, himself helped break up the fight.

“So wala gyud napugngan, in fact nine seconds na lang man unta to dihang nahitabo, so nag-foul ang pikas nga team, unya human og free throw, nibalos pud tung pikas muna wala na gyud napugngan, nag-erupt gyud ang kagubot,” Melliza said.

It was found that the two teams had clashed in previous games in other barangay leagues.

The two teams involved will no longer be allowed to play in the league, which was among the activities for the upcoming fiesta in the barangay.

“So, most likely, katong duha ka team, dili na nato ibalik kay mao lagi dili man pwede nga ang ato lingaw-lingaw ra man unta to tungod kay upcoming ang atong fiesta,” Melliza added.

The incident has been recorded in the police blotter but neither of the two teams filed charges.

“Manghinaot ta nga ilang dalhon sa bugnaw nga pamaagi ug i-instill sa ilang huna-huna ang spirit of sportsmanship,” Cagayan de Oro City Police Office Spokesperson, Capt. Emilita Simon, said.
