Repair is underway on a flood control project in Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City after cracks were found on the structure.

A resident, Riscal Saldia, noticed large cracks while he was walking in the area last week. He expressed his concern while taking a video of the damage.

The video reached the attention of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Northern Mindanao (DPWH-10).

DPWH-10 said the cracks were observed as early as July 2025, which prompted the agency to assess the structure’s integrity.

DPWH-10 assured that repair works were initiated promptly.

The agency said the project, which was completed in December 2020 with a budget of P117 million, is nearly five years old and requires maintenance.

The contractor started the repair at no cost to the government.

Another resident expressed fear that the damage could lead to flooding, similar to what happened during Typhoon Sendong in 2011.

“Didto gyud mi ni-action og kabalaka kay ngano basin nga magbaha og dako musulod na gyud sa amoa dayun dako gihapon ang among pagpasalamat kay wala sila nagpasagad,” a resident, Teresita Buriol, said.

The barangay council thanked the residents and DPWH for addressing the concern promptly.

“Hopefully atong gina-ampo nga unta ma-address ni siya and kami sa council akong gi-initiate pud naa man ko sulat hangyo sa atong District Office sa DPWH nga unta ilang malantaw ang integrity sa maong structure,” Barangay Chairman Achilles Babaran said.
