Authorities seized alleged smuggled cigarettes worth P15.7 million at a checkpoint in Pigcawayan, Cotabato on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

Police officers flagged down two wing van trucks and found around 400 boxes of cigarettes concealed beneath sacks of charcoal and sand reportedly to prevent detection.

The cargo seized was brought later to the headquarters of the Police Regional Office-SOCCSKSARGEN (PRO-12) in General Santos City on Friday for inventory by personnel of the Bureau of Customs (BOC-12).

Authorities also arrested five people, including two drivers.

Based on investigation, the alleged contraband allegedly came from Lanao del Sur and was supposed to be delivered to Kabacan, Cotabato.

Police added those who will be charged may not be able to post bail since the contraband involved is of a large amount.

“Under the law it is already tantamount to economic sabotage or agricultural smuggling. That is non bailable offense,” PRO-12 Director, Brigadier General Arnold Ardiente, said.

PRO-12 also warned small stores against smuggled cigarettes.

“Even tindahan, actually kahapon we already give instruction to chief of police kahit sa mga tindahan pag mahulihan sila we will hold them accountable,” Ardiente added.
