Authorities rescued 27 women and arrested three suspected illegal recruiters in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

According to the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD)-Zamboanga Satellite Office, the victims are from Luzon and Metro Manila.

“Ang mga biktima ay ni-recruit ng illegal recruiters. Tatlong hindi pa kilalang kasamahan nila ay nahuli na rin,” MSSD Zamboanga Satellite Office Head, Leeshabel Adil, was quoted as saying.

MSSD added that nine of the victims were bound for Thailand and Malaysia where they had been promised jobs as customer service representatives. The others were reportedly recruited as entertainers.

Based on investigation, all of their documents were found to be fake.

MSSD extended food and non-food items, including hygiene kits, to the individuals rescued. The victims were also given free transportation to Zamboanga City so they could file cases.

MSSD social workers also conducted counseling sessions to offer emotional support and guidance to the victims and help them recover from trauma.

MSSD Minister and Deputy Floor Leader of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority Parliament, Atty. Raissa Jajurie, said MSSD is ready to provide interventions for victims of trafficking in persons.

Coordination among agencies concerned has also been strengthened to combat illegal recruitment, especially that syndicates have been using the island municipalities in the region as exit points.
