A migratory bird with a gunshot wound was rescued in Magpet, Cotabato.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12) identified the bird as an oriental honey-buzzard, a migratory raptor species. It weighed 1.5 kilos and has a body length of 18 inches and a wingspan of 48 inches.

DENR-12 said a member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) spotted the injured bird on his way to work and turned it over to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).

The bird has wounds on its left wing and claw when found.

Based on initial assessment, the bird may have been shot with an air gun.

According to the Municipal Veterinary Office, the bird is stable, as of this writing, but continuous medical attention is needed.

MENRO has coordinated with the DENR-PENRO to facilitate the bird’s transfer for appropriate care.

“The Oriental Honey-buzzard has since been endorsed to PENRO Cotabato and is set to be turned over to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center for treatment and recovery,” DENR-12 said.

The bird will be released back into its natural habitat once rehabilitated fully.

“The incident highlights the vital role of local communities in wildlife protection and reinforces ongoing efforts by DENR and partner LGUs to safeguard biodiversity across Cotabato Province,” DENR-12 said.
