Four people were found dead while four others remain missing, as of September 15, 2025, after they were reportedly carried away by strong current while swimming at the Talomo River near the Mini Asik-Asik Falls in Barangay Carmen, Baguio District, Davao City on Sunday, September 14.
Several residents went swimming at the river when the water rose suddenly and the strong current swept the victims away.
According to the Baguio Police Station, at least 12 people were rescued while five others went missing.
“Kani man gud lima nga naanod mao ni ang una nga natangay sa unang bugso sa tubig, kumbaga sa ulo maong baha wala sila kadagan katong nabilin sa may pangpang safely rescued to sila,” Baguio Police Station Chief, Major Lisandro Bernado, said.
Of the five individuals missing, a 12-year-old girl from St. Jude Buhangin was found dead by a creek in Barangay Cawayan around 6 a.m. on Monday.
The search and retrieval operations for the remaining four missing individuals continue, as of this writing.
Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl from Barangay Tamayong and a 47-year-old man and his 11-year-old son were also found dead on the same day. They may have drowned after getting away by strong current in another part of the river.
The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reminded the public that any activity, including entry into the falls, is strictly prohibited due to the risk of landslides.
CDRRMO Head, Alfredo Baloran, said the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Davao (MGB-11) had declared the area a danger zone as early as 2022 because of its susceptibility to landslides, especially during heavy rains.
Baloran added that the creek in the area is connected to rivers in nearby areas of Davao City that are prone to flooding during downpour.
