A police officer died and another was wounded after a fellow policeman opened fire at a checkpoint in Barangay Gaddangao, Rizal, Cagayan on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

Police said the suspect had just returned from patrol duty with colleagues when he pointed his issued rifle suddenly at their post commander. When two officers tried to calm him down, the suspect fired at them.

One of the two officers were declared dead on arrival at a hospital. The other sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is being treated, as of this writing.

“So, itong mga involved, itong suspect nga po kasama ’yung biktima ay magkakasama doon po mismo sa checkpoint doon, sila po ’yung naka-deploy doon,” PCapt. Shiela Joy Fronda, spokesperson of the Cagayan Provincial Police Office, said.

One more officer managed to escape unhurt.

Police said the motive remains unclear.

“Up to this time, on-going ’yung pagka-conduct ng in-depth investigation na kung ano ’yung nagtulak dito sa suspect para gawin ’yun,” Fronda said.

The suspect surrendered after the incident and is now under police custody. He faces multiple charges, including homicide and frustrated homicide. Authorities assured the families of the victims that justice will be served.
