At least 17 families were displaced after flooding hit Barangay Curuan, Zamboanga City evening on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
According to the city government, 11 sitios were affected, including Mango Drive, Sitio Camias, Market Site, River Site, Poblacion, Parusan, Inner Presa, Sitio Betong, Sitio Presa, Sitio Mina, and Urban Poor.
Personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committee were deployed to rescue residents who were trapped in their houses.
Based on the profiling conducted by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the families affected were evacuated to a basketball Court in the barangay due to rising floodwaters.
The families affected were provided with relief goods, hygiene kits, mats, blankets, and other necessities.
FLOOD CONTROL
In a related development, the local government is eyeing flood control projects in vulnerable areas of Barangays San Roque and Pasonanca.
Mayor Khymer Olaso and other city officials inspected these areas and visited several sitios to identify urgent interventions needed to address flooding problems.
He also spoke with residents to hear their concerns and experiences during flooding.
Olaso directed the City Engineer’s Office to map out priority projects such as the construction of sheet piles, bridges, and box culverts, along with the desilting of clogged waterways.
