A 42-year-old woman was injured after a coconut tree fell on their house amid heavy rains and strong winds in Barangay Crossing Rubber, Tupi, South Cotabato.

According to the barangay, the tree had already been deteriorated before it collapsed.

The house made of light materials was damaged severely.

“Pagdating namin doon, wasak ang bahay kasi yung puno ng niyog, makita mo, mahina na ang pundasyon niya. Wasak talaga. Nasa loob yung pamilya,” Barangay Councilwoman Gemma Hontiveros Orencio Malazo, said.

Six members of the family were unharmed, but the mother sustained injuries in the head. She was rushed to the hospital for treatment and is under monitoring, as of this writing.

The family affected has sought shelter at a relative’s house nearby.

“Pinalipat namin doon sa kapatid niya sa tabi, doon muna sila nag-stay kasi balak namin, kung wala silang ma-stay-han kagabi, kunin namin sila sa barangay, doon muna sila mag-overnight,” Malazo added.

Barangay workers conducted clearing operations to remove the fallen tree.
