Three people were killed and 10 others injured in Masbate as Typhoon #OpongPH battered the province on Friday, September 26, 2025, while a series of tremors were recorded across the island.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said two of the fatalities were from Masbate City, one crushed by a falling tree and another by a collapsed wall.
Power lines and trees were also toppled, cutting electricity in several areas.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Opong made four landfalls since evening on Thursday, September 25.
It first hit San Policarpo, Eastern Samar at 11:30 p.m. as a typhoon. It then crossed Palanas and Milagros, Masbate at dawn Friday as a severe tropical storm, before making landfall in San Fernando, Romblon by mid-morning.
As the storm brought heavy rains and strong winds, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded several tremors in Masbate. The strongest measured magnitude 4.0 off Baleno late Thursday night, felt at Intensity III in Baleno and Milagros. At least five other weaker tremors followed before noon Friday.
Meanwhile, PAGASA warned of possible storm surges up to 2.1 to 3 meters in coastal provinces including Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Masbate, Northern Samar, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Quezon, Romblon, Samar, and Sorsogon.
Other areas such as Aklan, Antique, Bataan, Bulacan, Capiz, Catanduanes, Cavite, Iloilo, Metro Manila, Negros Occidental, and Pampanga may also experience surges of 1 to 2 meters. Authorities advised residents to stay away from beaches, cancel marine activities, and remain alert for further updates.
