Two men were injured after a tree fell on several stores amid heavy rains and strong winds in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Five stores were damaged when the acacia tree fell.
One of those injured is the husband of Macaria Aloni, owner of one of the stores. Her husband sustained injuries in the neck when he was hit by a portion of the store that collapsed.
“Nakayuko na ako dahil sa takot biglang bumagsak ng napakalakas pagkapunta ko diyan kahoy na pala yun. Naipit pa yung aking mister sa kahoy sobrang lakas kaya napatakbo ako kahit hindi pa natumba,” Aloni said.
Another resident, Toto Anggilay, also sustained injuries in the back.
Other residents fled their homes prior to the incident after noticing the risk posed by the big trees in the area.
At least five motorcycles parked near the stores were also damaged.
Personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) conducted clearing operations to remove the fallen tree.
Because of the incident, authorities were forced to cut down two other trees in the area to prevent similar incident.
“Putulin na lang yung dalawang puno kasi delikado kapag maulit na naman yung malakas na hangin. Posible kasi ito na matumba dahil napakaliit lang ng ugat nito,” Jayme Manisan of the MDRRMO said.
Meanwhile, a car parked inside the compound of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Barangay Lower Landing was also hit by a falling tree.
Several toppled trees also blocked the national highway in Barangay Montela, Aurora town, but MDRRMO personnel responded to remove them.
Another tree that toppled also blocked half of the road in Barangay Gapasan, Sominot town.
A resident claimed that a tricycle was hit, but the driver was unharmed.
State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather experienced in Mindanao was due to the southwest monsoon or Habagat and localized thunderstorms.
