The Provincial Government of Antique is set to review the program of works of the P200-million mega dike project in the Municipality of Culasi, following the collapse of a portion of the structure during the onslaught of #OpongPH.
The mega dike project which spanned through five barangays in Culasi was completed in 2018.
The destroyed portion is set to affect 500 to 1,000 hectares of rice fields.
Based on estimate done by the Provincial Government of Antique, funds between P40 million to P50 million are needed to rehabilitate the dike. It has vowed to assist in the rehabilitation.
“We are assessing, temporary muna na lagyan lang ng gabion at re-channeling ulit. Para hindi na pumasok ang tubig sa taniman so kung anuman ang assessment rin ng DPWH, mag-assess rin kami kung tama ang program of work. Ang nakita namin is force of nature,” according to Antique Governor Paolo Javier.
Meanwhile, residents of Barangay Buga, Leon, Iloilo expressed worry over a hole found at Inguan Bridge after #OpongPH barreled through the northern parts of the Visayas regions.
“Ang hirap kapag dumaan ang mga sasakyan. Wala kaming iba pang dadaanan doon sa kabila, wala namang tulay kasi naputol,” Sarah Calugas, a resident, said.
Residents further worried over the possible collapse of the bridge, as an approach has already been destroyed since August 2025.
“Grabe ang takot ko, kasi parang butas na talaga. Baka bigla na lang masira kung gabi,” Juliet Amolar, another resident, said.
According to the official of the barangay, the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office has started works on a riprap below the bridge but on a slow pace.
“Medyo na-delay talaga ang paggawa. Sinabihan na nga namin na bilis-bilisan nyo naman,” Barangay Buga Councilman Armando Cabañas said.
No DPWH 6 official granted GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas an interview, but the agency clarified that the delay in the rehabilitation is due to inclement weather conditions, citing materials swept away by flashflood.
The project was constructed in 1998.
Aside from Barangay Buga, residents from other 30 barangays who use the bridge are affected by the current condition. A one-way traffic scheme is being implemented. However, trucks that weigh over five tons are prohibited.
“In fact, tomorrow naka-schedule ako for a meeting with the Council and ano ang gagawing mitigation,” Leon Mayor Malin Cabana-Holipas said.
