On September 30, 2025, a powerful earthquake struck northern Cebu with its epicenter traced off Bogo City, causing devastation to several local government units. Days later, residents in the north and even other parts of Cebu Island continue to experience aftershocks totalling up 4,161 as of October 3.

UPDATE | As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025: The death toll from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in northern Cebu has reached 53, based on data from the Joint Operation Center in Bogo City led by Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro as of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
Those who died are from the following local government units:
- San Remigio - 11
- Medellin - 10
- Sogod - 1
- Tabuelan - 1
- Bogo City - 30
The operation center also logged 175 injuries.
Data on the number of missing persons have yet to be released, as of this posting, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in a separate media briefing at 10 a.m. on October 1, 2025.
Early morning on October 1, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) logged 26 deaths from the quake.
“Situation still being assessed. We've been receiving reports of casualties from different sources. However, we still need to validate those reports to provide a clearer picture,” OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Mariano told reporters in a message.

ROADS AND BRIDGES
- Asturias - Delfin Street: minor asphalt overlay damaged, surface cracks, and slight buckling noted
- Daanbantayan - Barangay Poblacion not passable
- Medellin - Bangon Bridge in Poblacion is damaged but passable; Dagosungan and Bangon Bridge
- San Remigio - The Lambusan and Looc bridges are totally damaged
- Sogod-Borbon - Damaged bridge
- Sogod - Damage Tabunok bridge and Liki gym Hagnaya Wharf road in Sogod is now fully passable (As per Cebu 5th DEO)
- Tabogon - Salag hanging bridge not passable
- Tuburan - Barangay Putat and Bagasawe bridge is passable only for light vehicles; Not passable for heavy vehicles: Langoyon bridge and Fortaliza
- Bogo - Cracks and damage are visible on the highway in Barangay Pandan, Bogo City, just outside Bogo Central School.
- Sibonga - Sibonga, Candait-Mangyan Brgy. Road is temporarily closed due to the fallen rocks.
- Balamban - Brgy. Aliwanay Bridge near Alberto's partially damage not passable.
- Pinamungahan - Road in Bonga-Lamac, Pinamungahan going to Bunga Toledo is impassable after large boulders. Road is impassable.
*Portion of the road from Sogod to Bogo is passable, but there are portions occupied by boulders
*Sogod to Tabuelan road is now passable (as per Danao Cebu 5th DEO)
*The Cebu road to Bogo is now passable as of 3:30 a.m.
BUILDINGS
- City of Bogo - McDonalds collapsed; Bogo Terminal was severely damaged; Bogo City Hall was heavily damaged; Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges Inc. sustained visible damages
- Cebu Provincial Capitol - Partial damage to vice governor's office
- Daanbantayan - Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima was totally damaged
- San Remigio - Collapsed sports complex and San Juan Nepomuceno Parish; Capelinha de Fatima Replica suffer damages; Municipal Hall of San Remigio experience damages; Newly completed public market of San Remigio town was damaged
- Tabogon - San Isidro Labrador Parish was severely damaged.
- Cebu South Bus Terminal - Parts of CSBT sustained damages
- Mandaue - A part of the new public market of Mandaue was damaged
- Medellin - San Ignacio De Loyola Parish in Kawit, Medellin was severely damaged.
MAGNITUDE 6.9
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake occurred at 9:59 p.m. on September 30.
The quake was initially reported as a magnitude 6.7 before being upgraded to 6.9. It had a depth of five kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
PHIVOLCS recorded at least 379 aftershocks by morning of October 1.
