Up to 25 hornbills, six of which were dead, concealed in suitcases were seized at a checkpoint in Maasim, Sarangani.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKARGEN (DENR-12), the birds, trapped in makeshift cages, were found inside a vehicle during a security inspection in Barangay Tinoto.
DENR-12 identified the hornbills as writhed hornbills and rufous hornbills.
Six of the rufous hornbills were found dead while the surviving birds were turned over to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat for proper care and rehabilitation.
The driver of the vehicle reportedly failed to present a transport permit from the DENR. He was charged with violation of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147), the law that prohibits illegal transport and possession of wildlife.
Authorities reminded the public that unauthorized possession, trade, or abandonment of wildlife carries penalties, including imprisonment and fines.
