The body of a member of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) who is among persons who perished in the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in northern Cebu arrived in Iloilo.
The ship that carried the body of Seaman Second Class Lawrence Palomo arrived past 9 a.m. on October 3, 2025 at the Iloilo Port.
Aside from Palomo, two apprentice seamen of the PCG were among those pinned to death as portions of the sports complex of San Remigio, Cebu collapsed when the powerful earthquake struck.
Palomo would have gone home for a vacation in Barangay Gemat-y, Passi City, which makes it more painful for the family to accept the loss.
Palomo, 29 years old, is the younger of two siblings. He left behind an eight-month-old baby girl with his live-in partner.
“Plano niya sanang (umuwi). Nagpabili pa nga siya ng baboy andoon sa bahay ang biik kasi magpapabinyag sila sana sa Disyembre. Kung buhay lang sana siya, mas mabuti. Mabait syang anak,” Roque Palomo, Lawrence’s father, said.
PCG-Iloilo has expressed its deepest sympathy to the Palomo family.
“Basta nasa operation ang mga personnel, expected talaga na palaging may risk at may posibleng mangyari sa responder. During that time, nasa gym sila ng San Remigio,” said PCG Iloilo Station Commander Richard Gura.
Palomo, a member of Coast Guard Non-Officer's Course (CGNOC) Class 85-2021 “Bagsik-Laya," spent four years in the service.
He was last assigned at the Maritime Safety Services Unit Central Visayas.
