Four people were injured while more than 100 families were displaced after heavy rains flooded Maasim, Sarangani on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Authorities explained that the flooding occurred after a creek overflowed due to heavy rains in the upland areas.
“Naghinay-hinay siya og overflow hangtod nga mibuwelo pag-ayo ang tubig, unya ang hinungdan pud nganong nag-overflow siya kay ang katong culvert, nabarahan og mga debris like kahoy, natabunan og balas,” MDRRMO Operations Officer, Mario Gimena, said.
Initial data from the MDRRMO showed that six barangays were affected, including Poblacion, Dalyaw, Kablacan, Lumatil, Kabatiol, and Colon.
Up to 122 families were forced to leave their homes after floodwaters entered their houses.
Authorities added that four individuals were injured, including three women who sustained injuries in the feet after stepping on the roof of their flooded home.
The other injured resident was a 47-year-old man who was electrocuted while trying to retrieve belongings inside his house.
“Naa siya’y gikuha nga gamit sa panimalay, natandugan niya tong wire, basa siya, naa’y tubig, nakuryentahn gyud siya. Maayo na lang naa ang iyang igsuon, na-off ang plangka,” Gimena said.
The man is now safe after he was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
In Barangay Kablacan, a man was seen clinging tightly to a coconut tree to avoid getting swept away by the rushing water. According to witnesses, rescuers were able to save the man safely.
The flooding also stranded motorists, prompting authorities to close the roads affected temporarily while clearing operations were conducted. Responders assisted stranded passengers in crossing the flooded areas.
Vehicles were allowed to pass after five to six hours.
Authorities are still assessing the extent of damage, as of this writing.
State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather experienced in Mindanao was due to the effects of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
“Resulta yun ng effect nitong Intertropical Convergence Zone kung saan nagdudulot ito ng maraming pag-ulan. Sapul na sapul yung southwestern at southern portion ng Mindanao area,” PAGASA-12 Chief Meteorological Officer, Engr. Jaymar Artigas, said.
