Classes were stalled at Sipalay National High School after an earthquake jolted Sipalay City, Negros Occidental at 8:04 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Photographs showed that students went out of the school buildings and stayed at an open space where they dropped to the ground and covered their heads.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), a magnitude 4.9 earthquake rocked Sipalay City.

The depth of focus is 10 kilometers, PHIVOLCS said.

"Kasi ang Sipalay may mga instances na nililindol pero mahina. Ngayon lang siya lumakas. Hindi naman iyan bago. Kasi mayroon na dyang fault,” said Ptolemy Mañego, assistant Science research specialist at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory.

In Kabankalan City, students along with their teachers went out of their classrooms toward the open field after the shaking.

Intensity 1 was felt in Bago City.

Classes resumed after a few minutes.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has monitored continuously the effects of the tremor.

“Wala naman tayong nakita na reported affected na population or major incidents na reported,” Bryll Larry Sañor, PDRRMO deputy chief, said.

In Iloilo City, students of a university vacated classrooms past 8 a.m., but classes resumed immediately.

According to PHIVOLCS, Intensity 2 was felt in Iloilo City.
