The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off Manay in Davao Oriental in Mindanao is not connected to the magnitude 6.9 earthquake off Bogo City, Cebu in the Visayas.
This was clarified by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in a media conference on Friday, October 10, 2025, shortly after the quake in Davao Oriental.
PHIVOLCS said the quake in Davao Oriental was caused by movement of the Philippine trench while the earthquake in Cebu was caused by movement of the Bogo Bay Fault.
“These are all independent earthquake generators,” said PHIVOLCS Director, Dr. Teresito Bacolcol.
"These are all not connected. Yung mga active faults natin are independent from each other… unless they are very close to each other, pwede magkaroon ng what we call stress transfer but, in this case, masyado na pong malayo, from Cebu to La Union and Mindanao… wala po silang koneskyon,” Bacolcol said.
The quake in Davao Oriental came just a little over a week after the quake in Cebu and after after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake that shook parts of Northern Luzon on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
PHIVOLCS first recorded the quake at magnitude 7.6 but downgraded it to 7.5 and later to 7.4.
The quake had a depth of 23 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
