Teachers and students in Baguio City and Benguet showed their readiness during the strong earthquake that shook parts of Northern Luzon on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
In Benguet, CCTV footage from a classroom at Benguet National High School captured Grade 12 students doing the same emergency procedure. Their teacher, Nicolette Bon Tabanda Palacsa, said the students acted quickly after the tremor.
“The video is for showing na yung mga naiisip natin na expectation versus reality, ay nagtutugma talaga,” she said.
“Hindi naman natin maikakaila, ‘di ba, na maramdaman pa rin natin ‘yung nerbyos, worry, kaba, pero ang napansin ko, they are very mindful,” she added.
At Crystal Cave Integrated School in Baguio City, teachers and students performed the “duck, cover, and hold” drill calmly, and evacuated quickly to the designated area.
Authorities from the Office of Civil Defense–Cordillera (OCD-CAR) continued to monitor and conduct structural assessments in Baguio City, Benguet, and Mountain Province after the quake.
Meanwhile, the Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reminded residents to stay alert during earthquakes. The agency reiterated the importance of performing “duck, cover, and hold,” staying away from windows and heavy objects, and moving to open areas for safety.
Adreanne Pagsolingan, Public Information Officer of OCD-Region 1, reported minor damages in some areas.
“May mga naka-report po sa atin na may cracks po sa apat na buildings ng schools po sa Sison, Pangasinan,” she said.
“May na-report din po tayo na isang portion po ng bridge po doon sa Rosario, La Union ‘yung may minor damage po, but upon inspection naman po ng LGU Rosario, passable naman po,” she added.
Authorities are still assessing the total cost of damage to infrastructure in the affected provinces.
