The number of people who were reported to have died due to the magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 twin earthquakes that struck off Manay, Davao Oriental has climbed to 10, according to the Department of Health-Davao (DOH-11).
DOH-11 said four fatalities were reported in Davao de Oro, three in Davao Oriental, and one each in Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, and Davao City.
Among the fatalities in Davao de Oro were three miners who were buried in a landslide in Gumayan, Barangay Kingking, Pantukan town when the magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked the region.
The Davao de Oro Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said at least 10 others were injured during the landslide.
Authorities said the portion of the mountain that gave way was a mining area. Fellow miners helped retrieve their colleagues who were buried.
“These casualties who are just outside, who went outside their tunnels. So, wala pong reported na bahay na natabunan ng landslide,” Davao de Oro PDRRMO Head, Joseph Loy, said.
Around 273 barangays from 11 towns in the province were affected.
The provincial government has ordered the temporary suspension of large- and small-scale mining operations in the province.
“Nag-issue narin ako ng executive order para i-temporary close yung mga mining area o site natin dito sa Davao de Oro,” Davao de Oro Governor Raul Mabanglo, said.
