A public elementary school in General Santos City has shifted to blended learning after cracks were found in one of the buildings and in several classrooms following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off Manay, Davao Oriental on Friday, October 10, 2025.
The damage was discovered at the Dadiangas South Central Elementary School, where a major crack exposed old steel reinforcements in the foundation of one of the school’s buildings.
According to the school’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), the cracks worsened after the strong tremors.
“Upon checking meron kaming nakitang cracks sa iba’t- ibang classrooms at meron din kaming nakita na major crack dito sa aming old building ng aming paaralan, sa poste talaga,” School DRRMO Coordinator, Angelo Bravo, said.
The school has already submitted a situational report to the Division Office and requested a technical inspection to determine whether the building remains safe for occupancy.
“Pinasa namin sa Division Office. Need naming ng technical inspection, kung need ba siyang i-occupy or safe pa ba siya for the occupancy ng mga bata,” Bravo added.
Dadiangas South Central Elementary School is among the schools that implemented blended learning after the local government suspended face-to-face classes until Tuesday, October 14, 2025, to give way for the ongoing structural inspection and safety assessment.
“For public structures na ang nag-implement is DPWH, it is the DPWH will do that, kasama sa kanila yung national road and bridges, and then for the private buildings, for structures naman funded by the local government it is the City Engineer’s Office,” City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) Head, Dr. Bong Dacera, said.
