Over 400 classrooms in the Province of Iloilo sustained damages because of successive earthquakes, while over 100 have been declared “unsafe,” according to the Department of Education (DepEd) Iloilo.

A total of 414 classrooms sustained visible cracks, according to Leonil Salvilla, spokesperson of DepEd Division of Iloilo,  based on a summary report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

As of October 14, 2025, a total of 145 schools has submitted reports on the effects of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked Cebu on September 30, 2025, and magnitude 7.4 that struck Davao Oriental on October 10, 2025.

Of a total of 2,465 classrooms, 414 were declared damaged while 104 were declared unsafe. Other classrooms, according to Salvilla, are subject for demolition.

According to Salvilla, despite damages, schools in Iloilo have contingency measures in place that have padded major disruption of classes.

DepEd acknowledges the authority of  local chief executives (LCEs) to suspend face-to-face classes, according to DepEd Order No. 022, series of 2024. If quake intensity, based on DOST-PHIVOLCS data, reaches 5 (five) or lesser, the LCE has the authority to declare suspension of classes.

School officials have the authority to declare localized suspensionb of classes as the need arises after thorough assessment, and the automatic shift to modular distance learning mode.

In addition, Salvilla said that DepEd may use its Quick Response Fund for the repair of damaged classrooms.
