A 48-year-old public school teacher was injured in a shooting incident in her own classroom past 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025 in Tanauan town, Province of Leyte.
The suspect is her own husband, deemed estranged.
In a video, the wounded teacher was seen being carried by her students after the shooting incident.
According to Police Captain Carmelo Gacho, chief of the Tanauan Municipal Police Station, the victim was already in her classroom when her 46-year-old husband arrived and shot her using a caliber 38 revolver.
She sustained gunshot wounds on the right shoulder and on the thigh.
Her students carried her immediately and rushed her to the hospital.
No other persons were injured in the shooting incident.
Police found out that the suspect threw the gun on the roof of a building adjacent to the classroom.
As the police have responded urgently, the suspect was still in the area when they arrived.
However, they said, the suspect wielded a fan knife (balisong) and tried inflicting self-harm but was stopped.
“Noong nangyari ang krimen, marami na ang mga estudyante na nasa paaralan, medyo nagkagulo at after nung incident, sinuspinde muna yung klase ng school authorities,” Gacho said.
The suspect was arrested and taken into police custody.
Based on initial police investigation, the teacher and her husband have separated ways for a year already. The two have been living separate residences.
One of the angles pursued by the police is jealousy.
"Ginagawang follow-up operation ng tunay na motibo kasi yung lumalabas ngayon is, talagang hindi magandang pagsasama nila, andami nilang pinag-aawayang mag-asawa, hanggang sa humantong sa ganitong pangyayari. (Posible kaya’ng selos, sir?) Isa yan sa mga tinitingnan natin, sa interview sa mga possible witnesses, lumalabas na ganyan ang lalaki ang daming iniisip, kahit na hindi naman verified na information, kaya lagi nyang inaaway ang asawa niya,” Gacho added.
As of this writing, the teacher is already declared out of danger and is recuperating at the hospital.
A case for frustrated parricide will be filed against the suspect.
