A heron and a raptor were rescued in Kidapawan City early this week.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), a migratory bird, black-crowned night heron, was rescued after it was attacked by crows in Barangay Poblacion on October 12, 2025.
The bird was rescued by a teacher and her husband after it fell behind a boarding house near a school following the attack.
The couple then turned over the bird to the DENR-12 PENRO Cotabato on Tuesday.
Based on initial assessment, the bird is in good condition but showed signs of weakness, possibly due to the fall and lack of food.
The bird has been placed under close observation and temporary care at the PENRO facility and will be released back into the wild once it recovers fully.
“The Black-crowned Night Heron is usually found in wetlands such as marshes, lakes, rivers, and tidal flats, with an average wingspan of 98 centimeters and a body length of about 61 centimeters,” DENR-12 said.
Meanwhile, a juvenile Philippine serpent eagle was rescued after it crashed into a house in Barangay Ilomavis on October 13.
The raptor weighs around 0.6 kilos and measures about 20 inches in length.
PENRO-Cotabato Wildlife Rescue Team retrieved the eagle and brought it to the City Veterinary Office for medical evaluation.
It was then released back into the wild after it was found healthy, with no major injuries detected.
Authorities urged the public to report wildlife sightings or rescues to support conservation efforts.
“The DENR-12 reminded the public that migratory birds like the Black-crowned Night Heron are protected under Republic Act No. 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act,” DENR-12 said.
