Classes, work in government offices, and tourism-related activities in General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte – the epicenter of the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that rocked the province on Friday, October 17, 2025 – have been suspended.
The local government, through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC), issued an advisory outlining precautionary measures.
Classes in all levels and school activities are suspended. School heads and administrators have been directed to inspect all facilities for possible structural damage.
Work in all government offices within the town is also suspended, except for offices directly involved in emergency, rescue, health, security, and public safety operations. Office heads are advised to conduct building safety assessments before the resumption of work.
Meanwhile, all tourism-related activities such as surfing, island hopping, and other excursions are also suspended temporarily pending safety inspections.
The local government said resort owners, tour operators, and transport providers must ensure the safety of all guests and refrain from allowing coastal activities until cleared by authorities.
The suspension of classes, work in government offices, and tourism-related activities will remain in effect until further notice.
The local government has activated its Municipal Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to red alert status to conduct response operations and monitor damage.
Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offices have also been activated.
The local government advised the public to remain alert as aftershocks are expected, avoid entering damaged structures or landslide-prone areas, and rely only on official information and advisories.
Other areas in the province have also declared the suspension of classes following the strong tremors.
