At least 20 structures in Butuan City were found to be unsafe for occupancy, based on assessments conducted by authorities following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off Manay, Davao Oriental on October 10, 2025.
According to the Butuan City Public Information Office (PIO), 10 infrastructure audit teams were deployed after Intensity V of the quake was felt in the city.
The audit teams have inspected and assessed 164 structures, as of this writing.
Of the 164 buildings, 20 were found to be unsafe for occupancy, 40 were restricted after sustaining minor damage, and 104 were declared safe after showing no significant damage.
Buildings tagged as unsafe will be off limits while access to restricted structures will be limited.
The local government said among the structures inspected were 32 school buildings. Validation for 17 other schools is still pending.
Of the total number of structures assessed, 21 were government infrastructures while 11 were commercial and private buildings.
“Ma-consider jud nato nga unsafe kung naa tay makita sa beam nga damage, labi na kung makita na ang kabilya. Delikado na jud na ug dili na siya luwas nga i-okupar,” Butuan City Disaster Preparedness Division Acting Head, Elmer Casapao, said.
He reminded building owners and administrators to conduct assessment once structural damage is found.
Based on situational report of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), 11 barangays in the city were affected by the tremors.
Several residents reportedly experienced panic and anxiety during the Davao Oriental quake.
Data also showed that four houses were destroyed while seven others were damaged.
The local government is still awaiting the estimated cost of damage to buildings and agriculture from the infrastructure audit teams.
The audit teams are composed of personnel from the City Building Management Department, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Department, Office of the City Mayor, City Executive Management Department, City Planning and Development Department, City Housing and Homesite Development Department, City Engineering Department, City Assessment Services Department, ahensya sa Department of Public Works and Highways - District Engineering Office, and Department of Education Department – Butuan.
