Minor cracks were found in several classrooms of public schools in General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte following the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck on Friday, October 17, 2025.
Personnel of the Municipal Building Official (OBO) and the Office of the Municipal Engineer (OME) conducted a rapid post-earthquake inspection and assessment of school buildings to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and personnel.
OBO team inspected Malinao Elementary School, Tawin-Tawin Elementary School, Consuelo Elementary and National High School, Corazon Elementary School, Sta. Cruz Elementary School, and Libertad Elementary School.
Meanwhile, OME team assessed General Luna National High School (Main and Annex), Sta. Fe Elementary and National High School, Cabitoonan Elementary School, Catangnan Elementary School, General Luna Central Elementary School, and Nissi Academy.
Based on initial findings, the local government said most buildings remained stable, with only hairline cracks observed.
However, a few classrooms in select schools were recommended for repair, renovation, or further structural evaluation to guarantee continued safety.
The local government said areas with major cracks are off limits temporarily until repairs are completed while structures deemed unsafe will be prioritized for demolition or retrofitting.
Authorities assured that continuous monitoring and reinspection will be conducted as part of the local government’s commitment to safeguard learners, teachers, and the community.
