The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked Cebu on September 30, 2025 has affected not just human beings, but animals as well.
These animals are the focus of a relief effort in northern Cebu dubbed “Biyayanihan,” a contraction of “biyaya” to mean blessings, and “bayanihan" - the Filipinos’ cultural value of community cooperation and mutual support.
The group of Dr. Alice Utlang, chief of the Cebu City Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF), along with partner-animal welfare groups facilitated an animal relief operation in northern Cebu.
They fed community dogs and cats along the way, and handed over food for animals with owners.
Aside from feeding, Utlang’s group and fellow animal welfare advocates conducted an animal medical mission and free neuter or spay of animals.
DVMF also partnered with local government units to sustain services and help more animals in need.
Caring for animals, especially stray dogs and cats affected by disasters, demonstrates compassion for vulnerable beings that do not have voices to express their hunger as well, or pain, or the need to be comforted.
