The local government of Laur, Nueva Ecija has asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Nueva Ecija 1st District Engineering Office to delay the demolition of the old Sagana Bridge.
Residents said they would have no road to pass through after heavy rains damaged the detour road built beside the bridge.
The LGU and residents urged the DPWH to repair the detour road first before tearing down the bridge to ensure that students and commuters will not be cut off from nearby schools and communities.
According to residents, floods often occur whenever the detour road gets washed out, as soil piles block the nearby creek, affecting those living in the farthest barangays.
The LGU said the demolition of the nearly 50-year-old bridge will push through by November 15, 2025, once the temporary road is fixed.
The new bridge is expected to be sturdier and more beneficial for residents.
