Authorities seized alleged smuggled cigarettes worth more than P17.5 million off Basilan.

Members of the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) were conducting a routine maritime patrol when they detected a suspicious fishing banca with covered cargo.

During inspection and verification, WMNC confirmed that the vessel was transporting illegal goods.

WMNC said the vessel was allegedly owned by a resident from Jolo, Sulu and was manned by eight crew who reportedly failed to present documents for the cargo.

Authorities confiscated around 300 master cases of foreign brand cigarettes.

The seized items were turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

“This operation reflects WMNC’s firm commitment to curb smuggling and strengthen maritime law enforcement in Western Mindanao waters,” WMNC said.

CAGAYAN OPS

Meanwhile, authorities arrested two individuals in Tuao, Cagayan after seizing boxes of fake cigarettes in Barangay Taribubu on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

Police launched the operation after receiving reports about the sale of counterfeit cigarettes in the area.

The items were allegedly being sold at cheaper prices without the required BIR tax stamps and graphic health warnings, a violation of Republic Act 10643 and the National Internal Revenue Code.

Authorities confiscated around 105 reams or 1,050 packs of various fake cigarette brands worth about P84,000, along with a vehicle and two mobile phones used in the transaction.

The suspects remain in police custody and will face charges. They have yet to issue any statement, as of this writing.
