A cemetery is among areas in Bogo City, northern Cebu affected heavily by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked the province on September 30, 2025.
Most tombs and apartment-type niches at Corazon Cemetery in Barangay Sambag, Bogo City have sustained damages due to the powerful earthquake.
About a week to the observance of All Saints and All Souls Days, repair works were carried out.
The financial assistance received by the Balante family, for example, was used for the repair of the tomb of their deceased father.
“Hapit na Kalag-Kalag, wala pa namo mapakuan, duna man puy hinabang, mao na lang pud among gigasto, ang hinabang nga para balay diri na lang, (Malapit na ang Undas, at hindi pa napaayos to, may ayuda naman, ang ginamit namin para dito, ang para sana sa pagpaayos ng bahay, dito na lang muna ginamit),” Mito Balante, a member of the family, said.
Another resident, Lucila Toling, said she is disheartened at the sight of collapsed niches and broken tombs. As personal funds are not enough, she resorted to borrowing money.
“Mao lagi sya nangatipak, naguol man ko, mao nang naa may magpautang, nangutang na lang ko og kwarta,” Toling said.
As an ossuary, or bone chamber, was destroyed, human bones were deposited temporarily at an area called "payag-payag" (makeshift shack).
Over 20,000 deceased persons are buried at Corazon Cemetery.
According to the cemetery’s caretaker, most tombs and apartment-type niches destroyed by the earthquake have not yet been checked by concerned family members.
To recall, 11 residents of Barangay Binabag, Bogo City who perished in the deadly earthquake were buried at Corazon Cemetery.
