At least 4,000 workers in the tourism sector were affected heavily by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked Cebu on September 30, 2025, based on an assessment of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Central Visayas.
The deadly earthquake also devastated heritage structures such as century-old churches, according to DOT Regional Director Gelena Asis-Dimpas in a press briefing initiated by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
However, no figures are available yet on the amount of damages as assessments are ongoing.
Hotels and resorts also lost clients who cancelled bookings immediately after the earthquake struck for fear of strong tremors and aftershocks, Dimpas pointed out.
Dimpas said that the entire tourism industry in Cebu is affected, as several visitors surmised that the powerful earthquake hit the entire province.
Dimpas pointed out operations of hotels in northern Cebu have already resumed.
The agency is attending to the financial concerns of over 4,000 workers in the tourism industry in Cebu affected by the earthquake.
Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) has assured strength in Internet connectivity in northern Cebu especially in tent cities, according to Engr. Ira Bermudo, Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) focal of DICT 7.
Certain telecommunication companies (telcos) have also vowed to serve the public in terms of strengthened Internet connectivity, based on commitments made by Marylou Gocotano, Visayas Relations Head Stakeholder Management Team, and John Christopher Paul Gulay, VisMin-Stakeholder Management and Corporate Communications Sustainability and Corporate Communications of the telco sector.
