Four drivers of modernized public utility vehicles (PUV) and two drivers of traditional public utility jeepneys (PUJ) tested positive in a surprise drug test in Bacolod City on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
Over 100 modernized PUV and traditional PUJ drivers, fare collectors (konduktors), and taxicab drivers took the drug test.
The six drivers will take further confirmatory testing.
The surprise drug test was conducted through “Oplan Harabas” of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency – Negros Island Region (NIR) and Land Transportation Office - NIR at public transport terminals in Bacolod City.
“Pag may positive sa initial result, automatic suspended, i-confiscate ang driver’s license at maghihintay siya sa confirmatory test. We will be filing a resolution sa Central Office for the revocation of driver’s license,” said Jeck Conlu, LTO - NIR regional director (officer-in-charge capacity).
Several drivers are amenable to surprise drug tests to clear doubts on drivers’ demeanor and fitness to drive.
“Sana isa ito sa makapagbigay ng malinis na pangalan sa ating mga drayber,” Rey Dalaguid, one of the public transport drivers, said.
A family bound for Metro Manila said that the surprise drug test will help determine which driver is into illegal substance abuse. The family said that it is appropriate for drivers to have a sound mind and in the pink of health while driving.
“Kasiguraduhan na din po sa kaligtasan ng mga bata. Magbagong buhay na, malapit na ang Pasko,” Justine Bucol, a passenger, said.
In addition, police have assured tightened security at public transport terminals and at cemeteries in the region.
"We have inspecting teams on the run to check our deployment,” according to Lt. Col. Joem Malong, spokesperson of Police Regional Office - NIR.
