A rider and his live-in partner died after they were run over by a passenger bus during an accident involving a dog on the national highway in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

CCTV footage showed a dog crossing the highway but turned back suddenly, causing an oncoming motorcycle to hit it.

The impact threw the rider and his live-in partner, who was riding in pillion, off the motorcycle to the opposite lane where they were run over by an approaching bus.

The victims, both residents of Gingoog City, died on the spot.

Police said the motorcycle was heading to Butuan City while the bus was bound for Cagayan de Oro City.

“Kung basehan nato ang katung CCTV and of course mga hulagway nga atoang nakuha sa insidente maybe siguro ang ulo maoy kusog nga impact,” Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) Spokesperson, Major Joann Navarro, said.

The bus driver was taken into police custody but police said the bus company and the victims’ families were in talks for an amicable settlement.

“Although aduna na’y mga move ang both parties nga mag-ammicable settlement sila but atoa panang gihulatan once nga mo-lapse ang reglementary period,” Navarro added.

Authorities are also investigating whether the dog involved had an owner, noting that under the Animal Welfare Act, pet owners are responsible for ensuring their animals are secured and do not pose danger to the public.

“Kini atong Animal Welfare Act kaning mga tag-iya sa mga iro dapat nakahipos kana sila adunay mag-atiman ana nila dili dapat na sila makita sa atong kadalanan,” Navarro said.
