Prices of fish at a public market in General Santos City have gone up by nearly P100 per kilo due to limited supply reportedly caused by recent typhoons.
The price of tuna bariles at Central Public Market went up from P150 per kilo in the previous week to P180 per kilo, marking a P30 increase attributed to the scarcity of fish following Typhoon Tino and Super Typhoon Uwan.
“Tungod sa bagyo, hina kaayo ang supply,” fish vendor, Jhon Clarence, said.
Other kinds of fish have also seen significant price hikes such as lapu-lapu, which is sold at P600 per kilo from P450 to P500 per kilo in the previous week.
Salmonete is sold at P450 per kilo from P380 per kilo while Timbungan has jumped from P280-P350 per kilo to P400 per kilo.
Vendors explained that the typhoons have caused limited deliveries, leaving some stalls in the market empty.
“Tungod sa bagyo gagmay lang isda ginadeliver,” fish vendor, Cristina Tawaro, said.
“Wala bakante tanang lamisa kay apektado. Nanghinaot nga mubalik ni,” another fish vendor, Jacob Sebastian, added.
Because of the price increases, buyers are stretching their budgets.
“Sobra isa na lang gani, tama-tama,” a consumer, Ma. Linda Salmo, said.
Meanwhile, prices of some fish at the Bankerohan Public Market in Davao City remain stable, as of this writing. Pirit is at P240 per kilo, karabalyas at P200 per kilo, barileson at P300, matambaka at P370, and moro-moro at P340.
