Strong winds and high waves from Super Typhoon #UwanPH left parts of Barangay Nibaliw Vidal in San Fabian, Pangasinan damaged heavily, with toppled electric poles and destroyed homes along the coast.
Concrete poles fell one after the other, hitting houses nearby as the storm pounded the coastal village. Several cottages and sheds were also torn apart by the wind.
As of press time, waves remain high in the area. There is also no power supply in the barangay.
Residents recalled how they struggled to stay safe as floodwaters entered their homes.
“Ang nangyari, nag-safety. Lumipat na lang kami sa isang kwarto. Hindi kami umalis, tinaas namin ‘yung mga importanteng gamit,” Annie Abrigo, a resident whose house was flooded, said.
For others, the damage was devastating.
“Nanghihinayang, maraming nasira eh. Mga gamit lahat na, wala kaming nailigtas,” Ricky Magliba, another resident, added.
The Magliba family resorted to selling damaged belongings to junk collectors.
Barangay officials said the storm surge reached farther inland than usual.
“Yung dati po hanggang diyan lang. Ngayon hanggang doon po, halos 1 kilometer ‘yung inabot po ng tubig. Talagang mataas po,” June Fernandez, barangay councilman of Nibaliw Vidal, said.
Authorities have begun assessing the full extent of the damage to determine the needs of affected residents.
“’Yung ipadadala nating team na mag-iikot, mag-iinspect, ia-assess kung ano ‘yung mga damage at the same time ‘yung needs na kailangan ng ating mga kababayan,” Avenix Arenas, assistant DRRM officer of Pangasinan, said.
Power restoration in the area is ongoing, with several downed poles still being repaired.
Clearing and assessment operations continue to ensure safety and the restoration of electricity in affected communities.
