Prices of vegetables have soared in Pangasinan following the onslaught of Super Typhoon #UwanPH, with some varieties nearly tripling in cost due to damaged crops and reduced supply.

At the Mangaldan Public Market, vendors said the sudden price spike began after the storm destroyed vegetable farms across the region.

Long beans now sell for ₱120 to ₱130 per kilo, up from just ₱40 to ₱50 last week.

Okra climbed to ₱80–₱100 from ₱40 per kilo, while tomatoes rose to ₱100 from ₱40 per kilo.

Even highland vegetables were not spared, Benguet beans now cost ₱250 to ₱300 per kilo, from the previous ₱120.

“Mataas talaga ang presyo, sobrang taas ng presyo kasi maraming nasira,” Saturnina Abrigo, a vendor, said.

Farmers said much of the produce being sold now are salvaged crops damaged by the storm.

“Nasira lahat. Itong mga benta ngayon, ito ‘yung mga nahulog noong bagyo,” Monica Serrana, a farmer, said.

Despite higher prices, some consumers say they have no choice but to keep buying.

“Bibili pa rin kasi kailangan namin ng gulay,” Remy Magalong, a buyer at the public market, said.

According to the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), vegetable prices may continue to rise in the coming days as supply remains limited.

“‘Yung presyo ngayon, sa tingin natin tataas pa ‘yan kasi marami nag-early harvest. Pero by next week, we expect tataas pa ang presyo,” Engr. Rosendo So, SINAG chairman, said.

If the good weather holds, SINAG estimates that prices and supply could stabilize within one to two months.
