A Hawksbill turtle, one of the world’s most endangered marine species, was found dead floating near the port of Zamboanga City.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Zamboanga (DENR-9), the turtle was male measuring 45 centimeters in carapace length, 33 centimeters in width, and weighing about 80 kilos.

DENR-9 said the turtle may have died from injuries inflicted by a sharp-edged object, based on initial assessment.

The incident was reported by the Maritime Police to the DENR through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Zamboanga City, which disposed of the carcass following standard procedures.

DENR-9 said the Hawksbill turtle is classified as critically endangered and protected under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147), the law that prohibits the killing, injuring, possession, or trade of any endangered wildlife species.

“The DENR reminds the public, especially those involved in fishing and maritime operations, to exercise caution and report any sightings or incidents involving marine turtles and other wildlife. Immediate reporting allows authorities to respond quickly and implement appropriate conservation actions,” DENR-9 said.
