Prices of red onion continued to climb in Mangaldan, Pangasinan this week, worrying both vendors and shoppers as supply in markets and cold storage facilities thins out.
Liza Fernandez, a shopper at the Mangaldan Public Market, said she now buys only white onions because red onions have become too expensive.
“Nakakatakot na ang presyo ng sibuyas, kaya ngayon tingi lang muna,” she said.
According to vendors, the price of red onions jumped from ₱140–₱160 per kilo in previous weeks to ₱240 per kilo as of November 14.
Sellers warned that the price may reach ₱300 per kilo next week if supply continues to drop.
Ernesto Aquino, an onion vendor, said stocks are dwindling fast.
“Tumataas ang presyo talaga ngayon, paubos na kasi ang supply ngayon,” he said.
Consumers have expressed concern as prices of other spices have also inched up. Garlic now sells at ₱160 per kilo, while ginger is at ₱200 per kilo.
But industry groups expect relief soon. The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) said the price of red onions may stabilize once imported stocks arrive in the country by December 2025.
SINAG Chairman, Engr. Rosendo So, said current stocks should still hold, for now.
“Nire-reassess namin kung up to when ang stocks pero itong November mayroon pa naman, wala tayong nakikitang problema,” he said.
