The casualty count in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental due to Typhoon Tino’s onslaught in the Visayas has reached 21.

The number is based on the latest report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), while seven persons are still missing.

The latest body was recovered in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental. It was believed that the body was swept away from Canlaon City to Moises Padilla by raging floodwaters that carried boulders.

Most of the persons who perished were not able to get out of their houses when the floods surged and carried their houses away.

At least 440 houses were devastated in Canlaon City, while 883 were partially damaged.

Latest data from PDRRMO mentioned of a total of 1,794 farmers in Canlaon City affected heavily by Typhoon Tino, and at least 1,808 hectares of farmland devastated.

Agricultural losses are estimated to have reached over P57.6 million.

Aside from houses, Typhoon Tino destroyed classrooms, chairs, equipment, and other learning materials when schools got inundated.

At least five bridges in Canlaon City are still rendered impassable, as of this writing.

Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco (Batchuk) Cardenas is thankful that despite the disaster, the spirit of “bayanihan” (mutual cooperation) is alive.
